Rhubarb & Elliott is dedicated to bringing real food to our children, families and communities. We are committed to this goal, and have started at the beginning, with children. We provide healthy, wholesome and delicious choices to students at several local schools and community centers. Our meals and snacks are prepared to our exacting standards: made-from-scratch, seasonal, interesting and tasty, deferring to local, all-natural and organic choices whenever possible.
Ruth Rosenstein launched Rhubarb & Elliott’s in 2010 with a vision to change the way kids are fed school lunches. Inspired by Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and Alice Water’s groundbreaking work with the California school system. The real food movement was catching on in school yards across the nation, and Ruth was driven to bring it to New Mexico. Her mantra was simple "Albuquerque should benefit from a more progressive approach to kids’ food and school lunches." It became clear that she had tapped a need for a food system that could bring fresh produce, whole foods and a strong element of convenience to parents throughout Albuquerque. Manzano Day School was the first school to come on board. It was soon followed by other private and charter schools (as they were able to operate independently of the contracts that bind the public school system).
All the while, Rhubarb & Elliott provided corporate and event catering, boxed lunches and a handful of direct-to-consumer retail clients, such as Betty’s Bath & Beyond and the Rhubarb & Elliott Cafe at the JCC.
With a system in place and sated kids dispelling the idea that R&E's offering were too sophisticated for children, it was time to tackle the next challenge: developing a system to bring real food to a broader community of children and families.
Working with the City of Albuquerque and New Mexico Appleseed, Rhubarb & Elliott adapted their program to begin providing fresh after-school meals to community centers (and one Boys & Girls Clubs of New Mexico location) throughout Albuquerque; they soon expanded to Bernalillo, too.
The goal is to make good food the de facto choice for children, families, communities and organizations throughout the state of New Mexico. With five years under their belt and a wonderful trajectory of engagement, Rhubarb & Elliott are discovering that their adventures in real food have only just begun.
